Background of the Study
Pain is one of the most prevalent and debilitating health issues among elderly populations, significantly impairing their quality of life and functional independence (Nguyen et al., 2024). Effective pain management strategies, including pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions, are essential for mitigating pain and improving the overall well-being of elderly patients (WHO, 2023).
In Katsina State, geriatric pain management faces numerous challenges, including inadequate healthcare infrastructure, cultural misconceptions, and limited access to trained professionals (Bello et al., 2024). Addressing these challenges requires a comprehensive understanding of the barriers and facilitators of effective pain management in this context.
This study seeks to explore the challenges of implementing geriatric pain management strategies in Katsina State, providing insights into how these barriers can be addressed to improve healthcare delivery for the elderly.
Statement of the Problem
Geriatric pain remains an under-addressed issue in Katsina State due to systemic, socio-economic, and cultural barriers (Osundare et al., 2023). The lack of trained healthcare professionals, limited access to pain management resources, and cultural stigmatization of pain reporting exacerbate the problem.
These challenges hinder the effective implementation of pain management strategies, leaving many elderly patients to suffer from chronic pain without adequate relief. This study aims to identify and analyze these barriers, contributing to the development of actionable solutions for improving geriatric pain management in Katsina State.
Objectives of the Study
1. To identify the challenges of implementing geriatric pain management strategies in Katsina State.
2. To evaluate the availability and accessibility of pain management resources for elderly patients.
3. To explore cultural factors influencing pain management practices among elderly patients in Katsina State.
Research Questions
1. What are the challenges of implementing geriatric pain management strategies in Katsina State?
2. How accessible are pain management resources for elderly patients?
3. What cultural factors influence pain management practices among elderly patients in Katsina State?
Research Hypotheses
1. Significant challenges exist in the implementation of geriatric pain management strategies in Katsina State.
2. The availability and accessibility of pain management resources are limited for elderly patients.
3. Cultural factors significantly influence pain management practices among elderly patients in Katsina State.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on elderly patients aged 60 years and above in Katsina State, examining the challenges of implementing pain management strategies between 2023 and 2025. Limitations include potential difficulties in data collection due to healthcare access issues and cultural sensitivities surrounding pain reporting.
